A practical checklist for a laptop that will not turn on and when diagnostics are needed in Kharkiv.

Laptop Will Not Turn On: What to Do First

"It will not turn on" is the vaguest description there is, which is exactly why nobody can quote you a price for it over the phone. That single phrase covers at least three distinct faults with very different repair costs. Before bringing the machine in, it is worth working out which one you have.

Three different kinds of "won't turn on"

Complete silence. No indicator lights, no twitch from the fan, the chassis stays cold. The problem is almost always power: the adapter, cable, jack, or the standby voltage rail on the board.

Lights on, no picture. Power is reaching the board and it starts, but nothing appears. Here the suspects are the panel, its cable, the backlight, or the video path.

Starts, then dies. The laptop runs for a few seconds, sometimes as far as the logo, then cuts out. That pattern suggests a short circuit, overheating, or a fault in the CPU power circuitry.

These three differ in cost by a wide margin, which is why distinguishing them early is worth the effort.

A five-minute power check

Start with the cheapest possibility. Confirm the indicator on the power brick itself is lit, and that it stays lit once connected to the laptop — an indicator that goes out on connection points to a short inside the machine.

Next, disconnect the charger, remove the battery if it is the removable type, and hold the power button for about twenty seconds. This drains residual charge from the capacitors and revives a fair number of machines stuck in a non-responsive state. Then reconnect the adapter alone, without the battery.

If you have another compatible adapter with matching voltage and polarity, try it. A failed charger is behind roughly one in five cases with this symptom.

Lights on but the screen is black

Shine a torch at the screen at an angle. If you can just make out a desktop, the backlight is at fault rather than the panel itself, and that repair is considerably cheaper.

Second check: connect an external monitor over HDMI. A picture there tells you the board and GPU are alive and the problem is confined to the panel or its cable.

What not to do

Do not attempt to start the machine dozens of times in a row. If there is a short on the board, every attempt pushes current through the damaged section and can turn an inexpensive power repair into a bridge or CPU replacement.

Do not open the laptop just to have a look if you have never done it before. On many models the keyboard and display cables tear at the first careless movement.

What to bring with you

The power adapter, without exception — the charging circuit cannot be tested without it. Have your account password ready, since stability under load cannot be checked without logging in. And tell the technician explicitly if there is data on the drive you cannot afford to lose, because that changes the order of work.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does diagnostics cost if the laptop will not power on at all?

Diagnostics is chargeable from 500 UAH, but if you go ahead with the repair here, that amount is credited against the final bill. We quote a price before starting work and wait for your approval.

Can data be recovered if the laptop will not turn on?

In most cases yes. When the fault is in the board or power circuitry, the drive itself is untouched — it is removed and copied separately. It gets harder on models where storage is soldered to the board, or where BitLocker encryption is active and the recovery key is needed.
