Common causes of laptop overheating and when cleaning or repair is needed.

Why a Laptop Overheats and How to Fix It

Overheating almost never arrives suddenly. First the laptop just gets louder under load, a few months later it starts stuttering in demanding tasks, and later still it shuts down mid-session. Eighteen months typically separate the first stage from the last, and for nearly all of that time the fix is routine servicing.

Telling overheating apart from other slowdowns

Thermal throttling has one distinctive signature: the machine runs normally for the first ten to fifteen minutes, then performance drops off a cliff rather than tapering. That is the processor deliberately lowering its clock speed to stay within a safe range.

You can confirm this without a workshop. Install any monitoring utility and watch the temperature under load. For most laptops, 85–90 °C at peak is the upper edge of normal, while a steady 95–100 °C sustained over minutes means cooling is no longer coping.

If the slowdown is unrelated to how long the machine has been running and temperatures look fine, the cause is elsewhere: a full system drive, background processes, or a failing disk.

Four causes, most common first

Dust in the heatsink. It packs the fins into a dense felt-like mat that air simply cannot pass through. The fan spins at maximum in response, which is where the noise comes from. This accounts for the large majority of cases.

Dried thermal paste. Factory paste holds its properties for two to four years. After that it cracks and stops carrying heat from the die to the pipes, even with a spotless heatsink.

A worn fan bearing. The fan hums, but actual RPM falls short of what the board requested. Cleaning will not help here; the assembly needs replacing.

Blocked vents. A laptop on a duvet, carpet or your lap loses a significant share of its cooling capacity, because intake is underneath.

What you can do at home

  • raise the rear of the chassis by two or three centimetres, the simplest way to improve airflow;
  • check that the bottom and side vents are clear, and keep the machine off soft surfaces;
  • in Windows power options, cap the maximum processor state at 95% — this disables turbo and noticeably reduces heat at the cost of a few percent of speed;
  • check Task Manager for a background process pinning the CPU at 100%.

When cleaning is no longer the answer

If temperatures stay high after a full service with fresh paste, something deeper is wrong. The usual culprits are a heatsink deformed by a drop, so its base no longer sits flush against the die; a faulty temperature sensor causing the board to misjudge fan speed; or a delaminated GPU die. All three are diagnosed at board level and none are solved by cleaning.

What it costs to restore cooling

Brand Price
Acer from 950 UAH
HP from 950 UAH
Lenovo from 950 UAH
ASUS from 1000 UAH
Dell from 1050 UAH
Apple from 1275 UAH

Warranty: 6 mo. Prices shown are for labour on the given brand. The final amount depends on the model, board revision and parts cost at the time of the order.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should a laptop be cleaned?

For most office machines, once every 18 to 24 months. If you have pets, or the laptop often sits on a bed or carpet, shorten that to yearly. Gaming models with high heat output are worth servicing every year.

Can I blow out the heatsink with compressed air myself?

You can, but the effect is temporary: the dust shifts inside the chassis rather than leaving it. Always hold the fan blades still with a finger — a fan spun up by an air blast acts as a generator and can damage the control circuit on the board.
